Musthave Monday: Fun(ctional) Bookcases

You probably all know these bookshelves, they are quite a hit. Many years ago I totally loved these and had to have them, unfortunately they were quite expensive for a highschool student so I wanted to make them myself but that never happened, probably too preoccupied with other things, like school stuff ;) Still they are quite cool. But we are not going to talk about shelves, (book) cases are on display here!

I love to read books but sometimes get a bit distracted by my collection of books while I’m studying. To improve the clutteredness of my bookcase I even had them organized by color at one point. Eventually my collection of books that were too big to stand upright in my bookcase grew too large and I had to buy some Ikea boxes to store them in. Not my most favorite solution to this problem since you can’t even see the books and they weren’t very easy to find even though I had labeled the boxes.

So that problem is what sparkled my mind for this post, I enjoy design, I enjoy books, I enjoy organizing and put them all together you have design bookcases!

It looks like it can tip over every moment, tiptoeing on its edges, its name, Equilibrium by Malagana, fits it well. No bookends needed since gravity will take care of organizing your books and magazines. Furthermore, this bookcase can be assembled in a mere 5 minutes, no need for Ikea escapades in which you lost one screw which makes it a pieces of junk instead of a closet ;)

The ABC bookcase by Saporiti (oh yes, Italian design) is a nice mix of typography and a bookcase. You can rearrange the letters and numbers to fit it to your own needs, you can even make it say ‘READ YOUR BOOKCASE’. That shall help you with your new years resolutions ;) It is available in a range of colors.

Both Pieter de Leeuw (l) and Kayiwa (r) used letters to form their bookcases. Pieter also played around with gravity as can be seen in his graduation piece of 2009. The piece by Kayiwa can also be used as a roomdivider, how neat.

And one I particularly like and would fit the style in my house is the Sapien bookcase by Bruno Rainaldi.
If you fill this tower with books with no gaps between it, it looks like you have made a tower of books which could lead to some funny situations when someone walks into it. I also wouldn’t stack those book so neatly to make the illusion even better.

Here are some other ideas, just click the picture and it will take you to the appropriate website for the bookcase.
