Musthave Monday: Topobo

A long time ago, when I was just a little girl, I used to build robots with Lego Mindstorms. I had great fun building robots with sensors on them so they wouldn’t bump into chairs and stuff! I have a picture somewhere of me with one of my robots, sadly, I have no idea where it is! I even wrote a paper about robots.

Yes, I’m a geek. No, I don’t care that you think I’m a geek, I’m proud of it ;)

Anyways, I came across something that was designed at the MIT media lab (you know, MIT, the place were all the big geeks come from!) that reminded me in a way of Lego Mindstorms, although it is something totally different. Maybe it just made my inside geek feel geeky again.

They gave it the name of.. TOPOBO!

What is it like to sculpt with motion? Topobo is the world’s first construction toy with kinetic memory, the ability to record and playback physical motion. Snap together Passive (static) and Active (motorized) pieces into a creation, and with a press of a button and a flick of your wrist, you can teach your creation how to dance or walk. The same way you can learn how buildings stand by stacking up blocks, you can discover how animals walk by playing with Topobo.

Just check it out. It’s really cool, even in a non-geeky way!
